Toyota Corolla AE111 Front Brake Pads Replacement

Changing front brake pads on the AE111 Toyota Corolla (97-99)

First, remove the wheel trim to allow the wheel to be taken off. Jack up the car, chocking the wheels and use axle stands for safety.

Remove the wheel. The car has been sitting idle for a while so the discs were in pretty poor condition. I was trying to get this job done between rain showers so I didn’t waste time sanding all of the discs – that can be done later.

Remove the retaining springs, the old pads and the anti squeal plates from the callipers.

There are two types of calliper on the AE111 Corolla. For this type, it is necessary to remove the two slider bolts from the inside of the calliper.

Once these bolts are removed, the calliper can be swung upwards to expose the pads. Be very careful not to let the calliper drop as this will stretch and possibly damage the brake line.

These are the old pads, fairly worn but still some life left in them.

At this stage, it’s best to tie up the calliper in case it slips and stretches the brake lines.

Like I said at the start, the discs were in poor condition. Without the time to sand the complete disc, I concentrated on the part of the disc where the pads were going on initially in case they picked up some crud while bedding in.

Now for the new pads, apply come copper grease on the back to prevent squeal. Also it’s a good idea to clean the old brake dust off the anti-squeal shim with brake cleaner to maximise its effectiveness.

This is the inner pad in place.

With both pads in place, it is time to use a g-clamp to push the piston back into the calliper to make room for the new pads.

Now insert the retaining springs, untie the calliper and reattach the calliper bolts.

It’s not shown here but I also applied some grease to the anti-squeal shim where the piston will make contact with it. it’s also a good time to clean the epad surface with brake cleaner, along with applying a fair dose to the calliper.
